Why Join MOAA?

The article below is copied from The Affiliate (January 2007 issue)--MOAA's monthly magazine for Councils and Chapters.
It can be tough recruiting new members, particularly when officers ask why they should join MOAA if they already belong to several other military associations. Exactly what does MOAA have to offer them that other military associations don't? Here are a few good answers.

First, MOAA is a leader in The Military Coalition that works each year to pass national legislation that benefits military members and their families. Second, MOAA has many programs and benefits in place that can help you with everything from transitioning to a second career in the civilian sector to booking a discounted vacation cruise.

The thing MOAA does best, however, is continually educate its members about their earned military benefits and entitlements and keep them abreast of changes that affect them. Recently, we came across the following item in the Green Valley (Ariz.) Chapter's newsletter, which was written by Cmdr. John Chernoski, USNR-Ret., membership cochairman and webmaster. His comments serve as a reminder that membership in MOAA has real value.

"If you are not an MOAA member, you might ponder why you should join national MOAA. First, our chapter's bylaws require chapter members to be national MOAA members.

"Another reason is more practical - the outstanding benefits and programs provided by MOAA.

"Let me share a personal experience. My 88-year-old mother lives with us, and her deceased husband - my father - was a retired Air Force senior master sergeant. My mother is entitled to TRICARE For Life, but in addition to Medicare, she has other health insurance (OHI), which makes her ineligible to use the TRICARE [mail-order] prescription program. However, I learned from MOAA that TRICARE will completely reimburse my mom for her OHI prescription copayments.

"Now, I submit … a claim [monthly] to TRICARE for my mother's various prescription copayments, and, like clockwork, my mom receives a monthly check. Thanks to MOAA, my mom now saves nearly $1,500 a year on her prescription costs!"
